Definition of Spyware
Currently the main threat to computer users privacy,
spyware has been a very fast growing industry for the last few years.
Spyware is software that collects information about
a computer users without their consent. Typically information collected can
include browsing habits and search history. This is then used to target the
user wth specific adverts that they'd be more likely to click on, creating revenue.
More malicious, overtly criminal variants collect
information such as usernames and passwords entered, as well as personal information
entered on online forms. This can then be used to hijack email and website
accounts. These less reputable versions can also divert frequently used websites
to fake versions with more adverts - these can be used to gain more information
and hijack online account information.
Spyware itself does not self-replicate like a virus.
It is generally delivered through an unreputable website wishing to gain additional
revenue.
